Participatory Methods and the Democratization of Environmental Research
November 3, 2021
12:20-1:20p.m.
This presentation explores the expectations and realities of participatory methods in environmental research and how we can incorporate research subjects’ participation in a meaningful way. Using a case study from West Java, Indonesia, I highlight several communities as they navigate participatory mapping projects established by civil society organizations. In particular, I explore how they are exerting ownership over the process of “participatory” projects and how this might serve as an example for our own academic research methods.
