Department Profile
With a background in interdisciplinary social science, teaching, and advising, I feel at home as an academic adviser in the wonderful community that is the Integrated Social Sciences program. I'm originally from Connecticut but have spent the last twenty years zigzagging between California, North Carolina, Florida, and Washington State. I originally moved to Western Washington to conduct fieldwork for my Ph.D. and to participate in local food system projects focused on native Northwest plants and salmon. Pointing beyond farming and agriculture as the horizon for food system re-localization, these projects centered Coast Salish knowledge and sovereignty as a groundwork for responsible food sytem practices and more-than-human thriving in south Puget Sound.
I was in graduate school when I discovered that I was most energized by working with students, especially implementing strategies for educational access, engaging students in social science inquiry and helping other learners reach their goals. I enjoy getting to know students individually, so I am always eager to learn more about ISS students' interests and aspirations to better serve as a resource and partner in meaningfully navigating their degree program.
I hold degrees in Anthropology and Religion (B.A., double majors, University of California, San Diego), Religion (M.A., American Religious History track, Duke University), and Global & Sociocultural Studies (Ph.D., Geography track, Florida International University).
