Thanks to some great feedback from our students, the ISS Program has created two types of scholarly awards recognizing student academic achievement: the ISS Quarterly Director’s List and the ISS Graduation with Distinction awards. This page describes these awards and the process we go through to choose the recipients.
At the University level, UW recognizes high-achieving students through a Quarterly Dean’s List and Baccalaureate Honors. Students taking a minimum of 12 credits a quarter are eligible to be on the Quarterly Dean’s Lists if they meet the GPA criteria. Baccalaureate Honors eligibility is based on a GPA calculation and is open to students completing a minimum of 90 credits at UW.
The ISS program is specifically designed to be flexible enough to meet our diverse students’ needs. Many of our students take classes on a part-time basis to balance their professional and personal responsibilities, while others transfer into the UW needing fewer than 90 credits to complete their BA. Students in these situations would not be eligible for the University-level awards. Therefore, the ISS program has developed its own recognition program for students who exhibit outstanding scholarship.
(Please note that these awards are given by the ISS Program, not by the University of Washington, and therefore will not appear on students’ official UW diplomas or UW transcripts.)
How We Determine Eligibility
These awards are based on a special GPA calculation:
For the purposes of these awards, the GPA calculation includes all UW courses taken from the time of enrollment in ISS, including all graded ISS and non-ISS courses.
The awards are not contingent on a minimum number of credits taken at UW (as are the UW Dean’s List and Baccalaureate Honors awards).
Courses taken at UW prior to enrolling in ISS and all courses taken at other institutions are excluded.
The ISS Quarterly Director’s List
Students will be awarded a place on the ISS Quarterly Director’s List if their GPA in UW courses that quarter is 3.50 or higher, regardless of the number of credits s/he takes in that quarter. These students will receive a letter signed by the director of ISS congratulating them on their achievement.
ISS “Graduation with Distinction” awards
There are three levels of “Graduation with Distinction” awards:
Graduation with Distinction in Integrated Social Sciences. Graduates will be recognized with this award for graduating with a GPA of all UW classes since enrolling in the ISS program between 3.50 and 3.69.
Graduation with High Distinction in Integrated Social Sciences. Graduates will be recognized with this award for graduating with a GPA of all UW classes since enrolling in the ISS program between 3.70 and 3.84.
Graduation with Highest Distinction in Integrated Social Sciences. Graduates will be recognized with this award for graduating with a GPA of all UW classes since enrolling in the ISS program between 3.85 and 4.0.
All students receiving Graduation with Distinction awards will receive a letter signed by the director of ISS congratulating them on their achievement, and will have a special notation on their ISS Graduation Certificate.
